Four of Metro Transit’s operators will be going wheel to wheel with some of the best public transit drivers across the country.

They’ll be competing for glory, bragging rights, and, most importantly, safety at the Community Transportation Association of America’s National Roadeo on Sunday, May 10th at the CHI Health Center Arena.

Darlito Ragodos and Bob McKean will represent Metro Transit’s paratransit service, MOBY. Julia Myszkowski and Dennis Kerr will represent Metro Transit’s fixed bus service.

Here’s how it works:

  • Drivers will take a written test with a time limit of 30 minutes
  • Drivers will conduct a judged, pre-trip inspection
  • Drivers will be tested on their ability to assist riders with mobility devices, with points awarded on how well they secured the devices and how they treated the rider
  • Drivers will complete a timed and judged driving obstacle course

Bus and paratransit drivers from across the United States will be in Omaha to demonstrate their skills and commitment to safety.

The driving test will happen in Lot D north of the arena, near the Baby Bob Pedestrian Bridge. The public is invited to watch from a dedicated area. There will be seating and concessions available for purchase.

Fixed route winning operators will be narrowed down to the top three contestants. Paratransit winning operators will be narrowed down to the top five. The winners are determined by the drivers with the highest combined score from the driving, written test, and pre-trip portions of the competition. There are two special awards drivers could win: Most Spirited Driver and the Driver of the Year.

The competition kicks off at 8:45 a.m. Sunday and goes through about 3 p.m. Visitors are welcome at any time. The Awards Ceremony will be at the Hilton Omaha across the street from the CHI. It begins at 5 p.m. and is open to anyone who would like to attend.
